VLOG – the standard for identifying non-GMO food

Globally, there is an increasing use of genetically modified plants in the production of vegetable and animal foods. Identification based on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is difficult, because of the global trade in agricultural products. The European Union has, with EU Regulation No 1829/2003, established legal certainty making it easier for the consumer to identify vegetable foods that contain, or have been produced from, genetically engineered components. Implementation and labelling pursuant to the regulation is laid down in the European Commission’s Genetic Engineering Implementation Act. Through its own independent standard, the VLOG association contributes to enacting Regulation (EU) No 1829/2003 as specified in the Genetic Engineering Implementation Act. Using a networked system of independent inspections throughout the entire food supply chain from production down to the individual steps of processing, the processing industry can identify potential sources of contamination caused by genetically modified organisms in food ingredients. This can, where no genetically modified plants have been used in the entire system, be declared with the “non-GMO” seal of approval, thus contributing to increased transparency throughout the entire chain of custody from the foodstuff producer to the retailer.
